To help prevent loss of human life in a workplace shooting incident, companies and individual employees must take steps to plan and prepare for these types of events.
This active shooter training program helps empower employees to anticipate and recognize an active shooter/threat situation and respond appropriately and immediately if they are ever faced with one. Specifically, it covers the warning signs of workplace violence, how to recognize the presence of a threat, the best course of action to take based on individual abilities and location, and the steps individuals should follow when law enforcement arrives.
After completing this active shooter training program, employees will be able to:
- Describe warning signs of potential workplace violence
- Discuss how to properly prepare themselves for a threat situation
- Recognize signs that an active threat is near
- Identify the best course of action to take if confronted with a workplace shooter and execute the plan
- Explain what to do when police arrive on the scene

What is an "active shooter"?
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, an active shooter is “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.”
Is active shooter training mandatory?
Although there are not specific OSHA training requirements for active shooter response training, section 5 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act states that employers are required to furnish workplaces “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.” In other words, employers have a duty to keep their employees safe from identifiable harm.
With the rise of workplace shootings in recent years, this kind of violence is beginning to be considered a “recognized hazard,” and employers have faced increased legal action following such incidents.
Why is taking a proactive approach important?
The key to stopping workplace violence is to identify and address potential problems before they escalate into a violent outburst. That's why you should train employees to recognize warning signs in coworkers and encourage them to report their findings to a supervisor, talk to a member of Human Resources (HR), or use an anonymous reporting avenue.
