While it’s scary to use the word “epidemic” when describing active shootings in the United States, incidents are becoming more frequent. Attack locations are unpredictable—most often occurring in businesses, but also in schools, government buildings, churches, and even outside venues. In addition, the number of people injured or killed during each incident is rising. Bystanders can no longer ignore the signs (as subtle as they may be) a shooter exhibits in the weeks before an attack.
Active Shooter/Active Threat is designed to help learners anticipate and recognize an active shooter/active threat situation and respond appropriately and immediately if they are ever faced with one. Specifically, it covers the warning signs of workplace violence, how to recognize the presence of an active threat, the best course of action to take based on individual abilities and location, and the steps individuals should follow when law enforcement arrives.
Equally as important as preventing an active shooter incident is knowing how to survive one. This training will walk you through avoiding the active threat, denying the active shooter’s access to you, and defending yourself against the active shooter. Learning and practicing these steps is every bit as vital to saving your life as knowing how to escape a fire or protect yourself from a tornado.

This active shooter training program helps members of management and Human Resources (HR) prepare employees for a potential threat incident. It also provides guidance to help the company and those who have survived such an incident recover from the tragedy.
After completing this training program, management and HR will be able to:
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, an active shooter is “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.”
Although there are not specific OSHA training requirements for active shooter response training, section 5 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act states that employers are required to furnish workplaces “free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm.” In other words, employers have a duty to keep their employees safe from identifiable harm.
With the rise of workplace shootings in recent years, this kind of violence is beginning to be considered a “recognized hazard,” and employers have faced increased legal action following such incidents.
The key to stopping workplace violence is to identify and address potential problems before they escalate into a violent outburst. That's why you should train employees to recognize warning signs in coworkers and encourage them to report their findings to a supervisor, talk to a member of Human Resources (HR), or use an anonymous reporting avenue.
